Went yesterday 25.8.12, with friends, the menu was very limited, my friend had the ploughman to share at £10.95 and it was only enough for one, I had a chicken sandwich at £5.95 which had no taste at all and the few salad leaves were oily - our husbands had the fish, which was described as the biggest, they need to go to Amble to see big fish and at half the price (and that is to sit in)
The old joiners arms did need refurbishing, and the changes made by the new owners are an improvement. But the prices and marketing will leave many wanting.
The hipster feel to the places can be a bit much for a local seaside village, and the pricing of the food and drinks is just shocking - Expect to pay close to £10 for a take-away fish and chips - double what you pay in beadnell or seahouses..
Fine for change, but I would imagine they will suffer in the winter without the trendy towny money...
Visited The Joiners Arms yesterday fab place but we were bitterley disappointed with our choice of food. We decided on a Ploughmans to share £10.95 when it arrived we could not believe the amount on the plate for 2 people. One minature pork pie, one small baguette, ten silverskin onions, one slice of ham, slithers of an apple (dont know what they did with the rest of it) a handful of grapes and two very small pots of chutney not even a tablespoon in each pot. So very poor value for money (not enough for one never mind two) in hine sight I wish I had voiced my opinion to the very nice young man who served us.
We visited from Cullercoats today, the most fantastic food and friendly service, very welcoming. The lamb was out of this world, beautifully cooked, tender and a superb flavour, iconic turnip green beans and carrots with the most gorgeous homemade yorkshire puddings. For afters, I had Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and succulent tiny red berries. Absolutely fabulous.
What a lovely place!
We visited very shortly after they re-opened and you could imagine it might be a bit chaotic - service was very good, really friendly and helpful. There is lots of space inside and out
The beer (Mordue) was jn excellent condition.
There seemed a mix of customers - from locals to the inevitable holiday crowd (like us) but all were welcomed.
The food was great - home-cooked and fresh, the portions generous (especially the fish and chips) and the quality very good. The fish was a large very fresh fillet of cod done in a light fluffy batter (almost like tempura) and really well presented with home cooked chips in a mini frying basket alongside.
The best point for a harassed father is that the place is actively catering for families. Colouring sheets and pens and a kids menu that is real food disguised as fast food. Fish fingers are nothing of the sort - 3 mini fillets of the same fish as the adults in the same lovely crisp batter; the chicken nuggets are chunks of chicken in batter - again home made. With the kids' mains you get a free small starter of doughballs in garlic butter and kids' puddings are £1. The ice cream was (I think local) and (I know) delicious; we assumed it would be a single scoop but it was another generous portion. The food prices are fair for the adult meals and insanely cheap for the children's menu.
I insisted on grabbing the manager and telling her how happy we were - it seems the pub is run by a group based in newcastle but the manager is local. I really hope they succeed, because they deserve it - it looks like they will at the moment as it was full the evening we were there.
This once country pub has been refurbished for townies, the staff are friendly with good service , the choice of food is exceptional but the prices on the high side, I was charge £1.50 for a soda water on checking with the young barman he said that was correct, also no premium quality spirits.
The joiners has been refurbished to a very high standard and recently reopened. Yesterday we visited for a family fun day. The place was buzzing with people, great service, friendly staff. We ate lunch and the food was fantastic, a much needed quality gastropub in Northumberland.
i love their crab salad
