went for a meal on good Friday fish and chips it was the worst meal i have ever had .The batter on the fish was thick of grease placed on top of the chips that made them greasy. the mushy peas was just liquid the garnish was warmer than the liquid peas. It must have been the chefs day off. If it was not his day off he needs to go on a course to learn how to cook . Never will go there again should have went to the local fish and chip shop

Been going to this pub for 5 years now, however visited it a couple of times before then (when the previous owner had it) and I could not disagree more with the previous review!! I have lived in the village nearly all my life and the owner has actually turned this pub around and it has became a welcoming village pub again! It's the only pub i could feel comfortable with walking in by myself and know there will be someone friendly to talk to, whether it be one of the locals (old or young) or the VERY friendly bar staff/owner (by the way I am a 22 year old female). As for the food... I have dined here before with family and friends and never have I been disappointed, for the record I'm an extremely fussy eater and the chef has always been more than willing to prepare me a fantastic meal even if it does mean straying away from the menu. Sunday dinners are gorgeous and always a fab atmosphere for families, couples and anyone else. The pub really does come alive on the night time and has some fantastic local bands and entertainment on at the weekend (also first Tuesday live is a great buskers night, some great young talent and very popular. The pub has recently been refurbished and is looking great, the gardens are in the process of getting spruced up in time for summer. Whilst the toilets have had drainage problems in the past (which most pubs will experience, every once in a while after busy nights) they seem to be fine, basic and clean, what you would expect from any old building. As for the manageress having an 'attitude' the only time I've seen any problems is when there have been disruptive chavs lowering the tone and causing problems, which in my opinion is a good thing, as I would rather not have unpleasant people bringing down the lovely atmosphere. If you are thinking of visiting this pub, I would disregard any bad reviews (if you can even understand them) as this is a lovely pub that gets a great crowd in, groups of friends, families, couples, young and old.

I have visited the Nelson on several occasions and it just keeps getting better. The staff have a brilliant attitude and are so helpful, carrying my drinks to my table when my hands were full. The manageress could not have done any more as we arrived just as food service was ending but she asked the chef who kindly cooked for us. We sat in the newly refurbished dining room which has a brilliant atmosphere. All in all a massive 10 out of 10. We look forward to visiting again and will definitely recommend to all my friends!!!

Go to this pub if you like to be on the receiving end of the owner's (or whatever she class's herself) attitude, Her attitude is disgusting towards the customers, if you are a man you will get served no problem but if you are a woman well you haven't got a hope in hell of been served ( I waited nearly 20 Min's for a drink and the pub was not even busy)

The food - where do i start its great if you like a COLD Sunday dinner, then when you inform them about it being cold you get the barmaid giving you a filthy look so god knows what they actually do with ya meal glad i asked for my money back.

The Toilets - OMG they stink of fish, he toilet doesn't nothing but overflow with well hopefully ya get what i mean.

The owner/wannabe is more concerned about serving underage drinkers, as far as i am concerned she is a total joke would rather be talking to her friends on the phone than serve you.

I will being informing the brewery of this because she is not fit to run a pub, as far the start rating it actually have a negative star rating

Four of us (2 couples mid twenties) went on a saturday night to see a band playing turned up and bought a round of drinks to be told off the manageress the was 3 private parties on and we could only have one drink then leave!, asked a few locals in there and was told there was no parties on!, last time we will set foot in here thats for sure, cannot think why we were told this, were we too well dressed?, we normally drink in the robin hood in jarrow and never have any problems. strange person.
