The pub has been extensively refurbished since the last reviews, and reopened in 2011 with new owners, and a new chef. The controversial sign outside got them nationwide publicity and tv coverage, so we had to go and have a look.
We went on a Friday night, about 7.30 and the place was steadily busy, and got busier as the night wore on. The decor is amazing, with fur-clad walls and crocodile skin leather wallpaper, and the lighting is from 120 (they said) table lamps dotted all over the pub, so it is certainly a lot different to the average country pub round Hexham. The staff and locals were all very friendly, and we ended up sitting in front of the roaring fire until we had sampled way too many of their malts to take the car home. Oops. We left the car in the car park and then came back on Sunday to retrieve it, and decided to go in for Sunday lunch, which was delicious roast beef and other choices. Great value at £6.95 for 2 courses.
It's about time there was a decent pub for Sunday lunch in Hexham at a reasonable price, so we'll be going back again.
