The ViewNewcastle Review
Manchester is well known for its indie and Britpop loving venues. Only open since 2007, the boldly named Venue is owned by the people behind 42nd Street, another of the city’s long serving indie institutions.
The Venue
A previously disused site on Jacksons Row (off Deansgate) has been converted into one of the newest clubs in Manchester. With a spacious dance floor and large bar, this uncomplicated design is commonplace throughout the city’s lower priced student venues and whilst it may lack charm or originality it provides an open, functional space.
The Venue is open from Tuesday through to Saturday with nights ranging from retro to soul and funk to indie. If you get your hands on a 42nd Street membership card then you can get into any of the events for free before 11pm. Double the fun then.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere at The Venue is what makes this club what it is. A friendly and cool crowd is made up mainly of the usual eclectic student mob. Everyone is chilled out and there’s no hint of any trouble.
As for the staff, they're good on the whole, although you might catch the occasional power trip from the pair of bouncers manning the front entrance.
The Music
A heady, contemporary music policy fused with classics from as far back as the swinging Sixties is what makes The Venue such a promising institution at its tender age. It is encouraging to see that the indie scene is once again fighting back and the ever-busy 5th Avenue and nearby 42nd Street have shown that there's still a huge market for guitar driven music.
In a city that boasts being home to such musical contempories as The Smiths and Oasis it is only right that the same passion is carried throughout the generations and for honest, reflective music to be at the forefront of Manchester’s personality. It is down to clubs such as The Venue to provide for and inspire today’s youth and currently they are doing just that.
The Drink
There’s a decent enough selection of drinks at The Venue, all cheap and cheerfully priced. With bottled beers as cheap as £1.20 and spirit mixers £1.50, even budget drinkers will have no problem indulging here. As is usual for student haunts such as, The Venue prices tend vary from night to night although on the whole the club is extremely good value.
The Last Word
The Venue is the type of club that can be enjoyed week in and week out. It is effortlessly fashionable without being at all pretentious and it holds a universal appeal for anyone who enjoys cool nights out and second to none value for money.
