As with the recent 3D version of Toy Story, the 3D upgrade to Toy Story 2 is extremely impressive and makes this an unmissable experience, even if you've already seen it 20 times on DVD.

What's it all about?
Not to be confused with the upcoming Toy Story 3 (also in 3D), Toy Story 2 3D is a re-release of the 1999 Pixar sequel, only with an astonishing 3D revamp courtesy of Pixar's team of happy geniuses. Co-directed by John Lasseter, Ash Brannon and Lee Unkrich, Toy Story 2 begins when cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks) accidentally ends up in a jumble sale and is stolen by a toy collector (Wayne Knight), who plans to sell him to a collector of memorabilia from the Woody's Roundup TV show.

With time running out, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the rest of Andy's toys – including Hamm the piggy bank (John Ratzenberger), Rex the dinosaur (Wallace Shawn), Mr Potato Head (Don Rickles) and Slinky the dog (Jim Varney) – attempt to rescue Woody but they're shocked to discover that Woody is seriously considering a life in a toy museum after he meets fellow Woody's Roundup toys Jessie the Cowgirl (Joan Cusack) and Stinky Pete the Prospector (Kelsey Grammer).

The Good
As with the revamp of the previous film, the 3D effects are nothing short of astonishing, adding both physical and emotional depth to the scenes. Remarkably, several of the scenes (most notably the delightful Buzz Lightyear adventure sequence at the beginning, complete with rocket thrusters and spiky door traps) seem like they were always meant to be seen in 3D anyway and were just waiting for technology to catch up.

The Great
The voice work is superb. Hanks and Allen make a terrific comic duo and there's strong work from both Joan Cusack as Jessie and Kelsey Grammer as Stinky Pete. Similarly, the script crackles with funny lines and there are several wonderful gags, both visual (the traffic cones sequence is pure genius) and verbal, as well as some enjoyable film references (Buzz's fight with the Emperor Zurg is a particular highlight).

Worth seeing?
In short, the Toy Story 2 3D revamp ensures that this already hugely enjoyable sequel is rendered unmissable. The countdown to Toy Story 3 starts here.
