Five out of Five stars
Running time: 81 mins

Toy Story was already perfect to begin with, but the frankly astonishing 3D revamp literally adds a new dimension, with genuinely impressive results.

What's it all about?
Not to be confused with the upcoming Toy Story 3 (also in 3D), Toy Story 3D is a re-release of the 1995 Pixar classic, only with an astonishing 3D revamp courtesy of Pixar's team of happy geniuses. Directed by John Lasseter, Toy Story centres on toy cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), who rules the roost over his owner Andy's other toys, including Slinky Dog (Jim Varney), Mister Potato Head (Don Rickles) and nervous dinosaur Rex (Wallace Shawn).

When Andy gets a brand new Buzz Lightyear action figure (voiced by Tim Allen), Woody finds he's no longer Andy's favourite toy and his jealousy is only compounded by Buzz's refusal to accept that he's not a real space ranger. However, when Woody accidentally knocks Buzz out of a window, the pair have to put their rivalry aside and work together to get back to Andy's toybox before the family moves away.

The Good
Toy Story is, of course, practically perfect, so if you've never seen it, you're in for a treat. Hanks and Allen make a terrific comic duo and the script is jam-packed with quotable dialogue and brilliant, laugh-out-loud gags, both visual and verbal.

The Great
The 3D make-over, led by Stereoscopic Supervisor Bob Whitehill, is nothing short of astonishing – it's almost as if the film was always intended to be seen in 3D. Aside from obvious 3D pleasures such as Buzz flying through the air and so on, what's most remarkable is that the effects actually add physical and emotional depth to some of the scenes, especially once Buzz and Woody get stranded in the outside world (the petrol station forecourt, for example, seems even more desolate in 3D).

Worth seeing?
The 3D revamp adds an intriguing new dimension to an already wonderful film that's both genuinely engaging and laugh-out-loud funny. It also bodes well for both the Toy Story 2 3D reissue in January and the release of Toy Story 3 3D in July 2010. Highly recommended.
