The Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival returns for more side clutching, rolling in the aisles, belly laughs and guffaws in 2009 with venues across the city getting in on the comedy action.

Gateshead and Newcastle Comedy Pairing
Laughter brings people together so it shouldn’t come as any great surprise that the comedy festival has bound Newcastle and Gateshead together in one happy partnership. The Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival is a popular event in the city’s social calendar and rightly so. Four venues play host to hordes of comedy fans for the first week in March and it’s side-splitting stuff.

A Week of Laughter
The Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival 2009 stretches across several venues – The Sage in Gateshead, Jesmond’s As You Like It, The Dog and Parrot, Nancys Bordello, The Retreat and City Hall.

Opening Night
This year, the action kicks off at the Sage Gateshead from 7.30pm on Monday 2nd March with Comedy Excentrique. Compered by Anvil Springstien, the first show of the Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival will see Rob Deering, Barry Dodds and Rhodri Rhys serving up a flurry of witticisms. Further entertainment will be provided by dance troupe, the Cathouse Belles, male burlesque TV star Warren Speed and Haylee-Mai who is best known for aerial circus extravaganzas.

Other Highlights
Some of the city’s latest additions to the comedy circuit take to the stage with superb stand-up shows at the Dog and Parrot for the Best of Long Live Comedy whilst the festival’s closing show is aptly titled Northern Glory and features top comedians that have all been born and bred in the North East. Radio Newcastle’s Alfie Joey joins John Fothergill, Mike Milligan, Seymour Mace and Christian Steel as they tread the boards and keep the humour on a high through to the closing seconds of the festival at City Hall.
