The ViewNewcastle Review
Kitchen cabaret is the best way to sum up Fujiyama. Here you'll be served by egg juggling chefs who like setting fire to things.
The Venue
Situated on Bath Lane, Fujiyama is in a great location to take advantage of the sights, sounds and aromas of Newcastle's Chinatown. This area of the city is colourful, atmospheric and buzzing - as is Fujiyama when you walk in.
The first thing you notice is the set up of the restaurant. The tables are actually hot plates, so your entire meal is cooked in front of you by your own personal chef. It's quite a sociable set up. If you're in a party of less than eight then you'll end up sitting with people you don't know.
The People
Chefs don't just cook, they are also the entertainment. They arrive with trays of raw fish, meat and vegetables and once you select your dish the fun begins.
Their favourite trick is to create flames so large you fear for your hair. They also show off a few juggling skills with eggs and are keen for you to get involved with the action.
Their antics make Fujiyama popular with large groups, so families and friends come here for a celebration. Expect to see at least one dad embarassing his offspring by taking part in the egg juggling action.
The restaurant is usually full and the atmosphere is great, but if you're on a first date this may all be a bit too much.
The Food
The food is superb. The Fujiyama Royale costs £22.50 a head (so not that cheap) but there’s an astonishing array of food on the tray that the chef whips into shape.
With so many ingredients flying around, it's difficult to narrow it down but the highlights include scallops, spare ribs, soup, tiger prawns, salmon steak, chicken teriyaki, sirloin steak, vegetables and fried rice. The skill of the chefs adds to the taste of the food and, with some interaction from each table, a great time is had by all.
The Drinks
A good wine list and a number of Japanese wines and beers that are available make the whole experience even better. Liqueur coffees are also on offer to top off your meal.
The Last Word
Fujiyama has the ability to combine the finest Japanese cuisine with a fun and sociable way to serve it. The idea of mixing tables for parties of less than eight not only makes good commercial sense, but adds to the social nature of the evening.
