You don’t go to Vujon for a curry - you go there for the finest Indian cuisine in the North East.

The Venue
Situated on Queen Street, just off the Quayside, you know you are somewhere special as soon as you walk into Vujon. The simple layout of the restaurant belies the quality gastronomic experience of the meal. There's a small waiting area as you go in and the staff welcome you in a polite and friendly way. The tables are set out with white linen and good quality crystal glasses, and the lighting is subdued.

The People
Vujon has a mixed clientele, with business people entertaining clients, families celebrating birthdays and a number of couples enjoying an intimate dinner. This mix of people would not normally share the same venue, yet Vujon manages to accommodate all of the individual requirements in the same room. The staff are attentive and happy to explain the different dishes, influences, spiciness and even make recommendations when requested.

The Food
The food is superb. Starters include kathi kebab (lamb with onions and tomatoes served in a butter chapatti) and boro chinghri bhoona (king prawns with garlic, ginger and onion). For what appears to be simple and straightforward ingredients, the chefs at Vujon cast a spell to give you something quite magical. These dishes cost £5.90 and £6.90, so they’re definitely at the top end of the curry house price chain, but as the old saying goes - you get what you pay for.

How can the chefs better the starters? By serving the murgh tikka makhani (chicken tikka cooked with almonds, butter and cream) and goshtaba lamb (lamb cooked with fresh spices, green chilli and coriander). The combination of flavours is fantastic and, even with the chilli in the lamb dish, the distinct flavours are there.

Plain white rice and plain brown rice (for the health conscious), along with a garlic naan, top off the meal beautifully. The cost is again slightly more than the typical curry - £11.90 for the chicken dish, £10.90 for the lamb dish, £2.50 for rice and £2.90 for naan.

The Drinks
A great wine list and comprehensive bottled beer selection is available along with draught Carlsberg. A bottle of Kingfisher and a bottle of Cobra, both at £3, are the sort of prices you expect to pay in any restaurant.

The Last Word
Vujon is nothing short of outstanding as a venue and most importantly in the food they serve. If Indian cuisine is what you are looking for, look no further.
