A bit 'out of the way' and that's a major part of its appeal. We've only ever got there on foot following indirect cross-country walking from Rothbury. There is a lovely welcome from both staff and locals alike and the Guinness is smashing (other beers available too!) Although there isn't food normally, there are occasional BBQs in the grounds: meat is provided by a local butcher - you buy it from him and cook it yourself on the BBQ grills provided, with rolls, salad etc available too. On a Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays (currently) there is a bus back to Rothbury at around 15.30 (check the timetable for bus 508 Arriva service) All of this means you can have a walk - as long as you plan to arrive, drink (maybe eat) and catch the bus back for a snooze - always assuming you're staying in Rothbury!
A real 'locals' pub where the locals are always pleased to greet holiday-makers and tourists. The Landlord, is very friendly and keeps his beer beautifully. They don't serve meals as such, but they do offer superb toasted sandwiches! If you are looking for an old fashioned pub, in a beautiful setting, with a genuinely friendly atmosphere, where people take an interest in you; then this is the place for you.
