Called in to The wellington today around 3.30. We ordered two Sunday roasts. One pork and one beef. both meals were dreadful, cold meat cold vegetables cold, soggy yorkshire pudding. The waiter was surly and clearly disinterested. A third adult in our party had steak pie and chips which was reasonably edible. The place has such potential but that will be our last visit until there is some improvement. My advice is if you are thinking of having a meal at The Wellington -don't. A place to avoid.

I have to say I think this must have been a one off as I go there one a month at least and have not had a single bad meal, in fact everytime I've been it's been top quality. A special mention for the staff also who can't do enough for you.

Having read the reviews below I feel I must write something in defence of the Wellington. Now part of the CHef & Brewer chain this pub serves excellent food, the staff are very attentive, the meals are served hot and promptly with generous portions of very well presented and excellently cooked food. The chef must really know their business as every dish my wife and I have tried in the half dozen times we've been there since Christmas have been consistently superb. Their prices are very competitive, in fact, given the quality and variety of dishes on the menu, the prices are incredible.
I sincerely hope that my revue can persuade others to try the Wellington as I'd hate to see this great foody pub go down like so many others due to lack of customers because of these unfavourable revues. I don't know when Chef & Brewer took it over but something must have changed from these people's experiences to what we have found there. We've tried most of the foody pubs from Corbridge to Gateshead centre and put The Wellington in out top three! Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
They do great things with fish, seafood and game too.

I was at the Wellington last night with a party of friends.
The staff were lovely BUT the food was dreadful.

We all had fish as a main meal.
One of the monkfish meals was over cooked, the fish pie was mostly potato and my "2 lightly baked crab cakes" looked like they had come from the local chippy and been deep fried and certainly didn't taste of crab...very disappointing.
Had I been with my husband I would have sent the meal back!

I have had excellent meals and dreadful ones over the years I have visited the Welly....does it depend who is the chef on the night?

Although it is a local eaterie I will not be going back in a hurry, there are far nicer places to eat in the Tyne Valley.

I have just returned home from a completely ruined evening. My husband and I hadnt visited the Wellington in years, having been put off due to the horrendous service back then, but it was once a good place to go, so we thought we would give it another try. Unfortunately, giving the Wellie a second chance was an mistake I will not be making again. Although then have undergone a refurbishment and some of the old favourites have returned to the menu, they still do not have a clue when it comes to customer service. We were shown to our table at 8.00pm and our main course finally arrived at 9.20pm a full 1 hour and 20 minutes later. When the food did arrive, the waitress did apologise for the delay and then promptly forgot our drinks over which never arrived.

Only visit this place, if you have a week to wait for your food.

Awful staff and horrible food. Visit this place at your peril!!

Waited 35 minutes to be offered a drink. Ordered food and waited a further 35 for starters. The food was shocking. Microwave/frozen crap. Not cooked to order and not fresh in any way whatsoever.

This place had a good repitation for food around 5 years ago and its such a shame that it is now so terrible, as with the right chef and manager, this pub could be wonderful.

Since visiting the Wellie and being appalled by the stinginess of the portions there I've spoken to other people who've been and it seems it's a common complaint. Most of the food appears to be frozen and cooked by microwaving so is very disappointing, plus you leave with an empty stomach and an empty wallet - Rip off prices for tiny portions.

Well where do i start, 6 of us, 4 adults 2 kids last night evening meal,

1st of all they didn't have what we ordered Fish pie so had to settle for another dish beef and bombardier pie, the starter garlic bread with cheese to OK over an hour to arrive the kids were starving, and we had to send this back as it was obviously microwaved, soggy and awful, however after complaining about this we did receive a free bottle of house wine for our trouble, the table next to us who arrived after us were paying there bill when our food arrived,

OK then the pie this was awful meet free or good at hiding and the veg frozen and tasting of vinegar, the only edible part was the mash or smash as my daughter described it and gravy granules.

we did complain about this and the waitress even said she could smell the vinegar,

then the bill arrived which included the 2 pie's which we were not happy to pay for and said so, the supervisor agreed to deduct 1 of the pies as we had already had a bottle of complimentary wine, and we thought this was for the delay, at this point the kids had really had enough and we couldn't be bothered to argue any more we paid up and left never to return

oh yes and we paid for an ice cream which should have been included with the child's meal.

needless to say we wont be returning

Appalling food. Soggy fish, slimy carrots, flavour-free cauliflower and cold cabbage. Over-priced as weel.
