My wife and I have been eating Indian food for over 40 years and were originally from South Shields. We eat Indian food regularly and consider we have some experience with this type of food.
We saw an advert in the Shields Gazette which said that the Indian Brasserie had won the readers award 2011.
We decided to drive from our home in Durham to sample the cuisine.
We chose from the special 4 course menu and what a disappointment! The price was cheap but the food was very ordinary!
We ordered poppadum and pickles plus peshwari nan in addition to the special menu.
The poppadum and pickles were Ok but the onion bhaji very greasey and the chicken tikka bland.
The prawn dhansak had no 'bite' and the prawns were rubbery. The chicken Ceylon was so lemony we could not eat any of it. Both variations of pilaw rice were greasey.
When asked how the food was, we commented that it was not great and that the Ceylon was far too lemon flavoured. The reply was that if we checked the menu it was made with lemon. To finish things off the peshwari nan was stodgey.
We were very disappointed with the food and the helpfulness of the staff.
The bill came to £24 and we did not think it good value for money and will certainly not go back!
