The ViewNewcastle Review
Coco Mos - good food, shame about the service.
The Venue
Situated on The Side, Coco Mos is in a great location for anyone going to the Quayside. A large and modern restaurant, Coco Mos is sleek and stylish. On entering, you're greeted with a smile and shown to the bar area. The restaurant is on a number of different levels which enables the restaurant to comfortably cater for large parties or individuals alike.
The People
The restaurant is busy, but even on a Saturday evening you should still get a table. There’s usually a good atmosphere with larger parties celebrating birthdays and quite a few smaller groups dotted around the place. Even though it is not completely full, the staff seem stressed.
The Food
The food is good although you won’t find anything new. Starters, like the potato skins and chicken salad, are as pretty standard fare, although they’re tasty nonetheless. For main course, there's spaghetti polpette (spaghetti with meatballs) and the funghi pizza. The spaghetti is cooked perfectly and the meatballs are tasty. The pizza is good with the base neither too crispy nor stodgy. Added to this the tomato sauce is balanced and not overpowering, and there is just the right amount of mushrooms.
The Drinks
A good range of wines, draught and bottled beers and cocktails means that all tastes and budgets are provided for. The coffee is delicious and liqueur coffees also hit the mark.
The Last Word
Coco Mos offer good food at very reasonable prices. The restaurant is large, airy and well-fitted. However, its main problem is service. The service delivered is poor at best. There’s a lot of time between courses and little or no explanation from anyone. There are also question marks over the attitude of the staff when paying the bill.
For this reason alone, the experience at Coco Mos leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
