This spacious disco bar on the waterfront attracts its fair share of blinged-up revellers.

The Venue
Jimmyz spreads over two floors and it's been vastly improved since its latest refit. It has large expanse of glass at the front, with big double doors that usher you in. It's got a wooden floor and a square patch of carpet in the middle bordered by four bronze pillars and there’s plenty of room for standing and dancing. The big bar is lined with high stools and there's a raised section at the front furnished with round crimson pouffees, low wood tables and fake crocodile skin sofas.

A wooden screen with portholes in it divides two sections and big orange lampshades hang above the bar. Meanwhile tied-back maroon curtains frame the windows and different old and new clocks crowd each other on the far wall. There’s something retro about Jimmyz, although it’s hard to pin down the era — some parts are 1950s, some 1920s. Upstairs are pictures of love scenes from old black and white films, luxurious silver and red wallpaper and a curtain of hanging round glass beads. But the office style carpet (badly in need of replacing) lets the place down, as it does with most places.

The People
This bar bucks the trend, and on a Saturday, when it's open till 1am, Jimmyz gets more of an older crowd who prance and dance to 70s, 80s and chart music. It's popular with hen and stag dos too when alcopop and disco mania descend on the place. Cheery beery girls drink pints and guys in stripy polo shirts flock together at the bar for protection.

The Food and Drink
There's a regular choice of beer on tap including John Smith's, Strongbow and Foster's (which is just £1.75 a pint during happy hour) and in bottles there's Beck's, Magners, Corona, Newcastle Brown, Stella and Budweiser. House wine is a ridiculously low £5.45 a bottle and you've got all the colours and flavours of alcopops you could possibly dream of. Premium cocktails are £6 each — or just £2.95 during happy hour (5pm to 8pm)— classic cocktails are a fiver and champagne cocktails £6. You can get a pitcher for £12.

The Last Word
If it's named after the legendary Montecarlo bar, Jimmyz has got a long way to go, but it does have a certain retro charm which is hard to pin down and even harder to deny.
