For great Indian food, a good choice of Indian beers and excellent service, you won’t be disappointed with Tandoori Nights.
The Venue
Situated on Grey Street, Tandoori Nights is positioned perfectly for access to the Theatre Royal or any number pubs and bars in the immediate area. It is also well-positioned for access onto Newcastle Quayside. You're greeted with delicious aromas that immediately make your mouth water, and you get the sense that a fabulous meal awaits.
The People
The restaurant is busy but the noise levels are not overpowering. Music is played but at a low volume, which makes for a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The clientele are mainly couples or small parties and everyone seems to be up for a good time. The staff are efficient, helpful and happy to make recommendations if asked.
The Food
The food is fantastic. Poppodoms and pickles are almost mandatory, and to follow these you can order a mixed kebab and chicken bhuna and puri. The meat is beautifully tender and the bhuna sauce is very tasty. Main courses include lamb kurma with chilli and a chicken rogan josh. To go with this, there’s mushroom pilau rice, garlic pilau and a garlic naan.
The lamb dish is superb and is a great choice for those who like the combination of flavours that a kurma offers, but with a little kick. The chicken dish is full of flavour and the chunks of fresh tomato give a sweet taste and thick consistency. The rice is aromatic and moist and the naan is light and tasty.
The Drink
Draught Cobra has made a big impact on the UK market, particularly in Indian restaurants and here it’s served well chilled. There is a good range of wines and spirits also available.
The Last Word
The cost of the meal and drinks is around £25 a head, which is not mega cheap but it’s not going to break the bank either. Tandoori Nights is one of those places where you know that no matter when you go, you will get a great meal, a good beer and fine service.
